There was no deafening reaction or dramatic celebration when Asiama walked onto the stage. Instead, the moment was met with a quiet pause and modest applause that seemed to carry curiosity rather than instant recognition.
For Asiama, however, the moment was never about the volume of applause or widespread familiarity. It represented a long-awaited arrival and a personal milestone years in the making.
For the musician, the stage symbolised the culmination of a journey that began more than a decade ago.
Long before the industry recognition, cameras, and major performances, a young boy was pursuing a dream that at one point appeared uncertain.
At just 12 years old in 2012, Emmanuel Asiamah Mensah took a major step by auditioning for the Glo X Factor. Although his performance impressed judges, including Reggie Rockstone, M.I Abaga, and Onyeka Onwenu, he was disqualified for not meeting the age requirement.
Rather than allowing the disappointment to define his future, Asiama used the setback as motivation to continue developing his talent and refining his craft.
Years later, that determination paid off as he emerged as the winner of the Best Male Vocal Performer award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Reflecting on his journey, Asiama said his life and creative process are deeply influenced by purpose and faith.
He explained that he believes every experience, including difficult moments, carries meaning and eventually contributes to a larger picture. According to him, he approaches his music by transforming experiences, emotions, and personal stories into relatable expressions that listeners can identify with.
Born in Effiduase in the Ashanti Region, Asiama’s musical journey began under the influence of his elder brother, Caleb Mensah, whose passion for acapella music introduced him to vocal performance.
As a child, he frequently attended rehearsals and eventually became part of his brother’s group, Praizapella, marking his first formal step into music.
By age seven, his love for music had grown significantly and led him to form his own group called Vipers, where he taught fellow children harmonies and organised church performances.
Inspired by renowned gospel artists such as J Moss, CeCe Winans, Smokie Norful, and Yolanda Adams, he immersed himself in studying vocal styles and performance techniques.
At age nine, his ambitions received another boost after meeting his first manager, Henry Duffour, who helped organise his first concert experience.
Following his basic education, Asiama attended Adventist Day Senior High School before enrolling at the University of Ghana, where he pursued studies in Fine Arts covering Music, Theatre, and Dance.
Before university, he joined the Nkyinkyim Band at age 20, where he gained practical experience in music production and performance while adopting the stage name Asiama.
His journey later expanded when he joined The Characters as a writer and lead singer. Through the group, he performed on major stages including the Global Citizen Festival, Rapperholic, Promiseland, and Afrochella.
His talent later caught the attention of producer and multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah, who became a key mentor in his development.
Asiama subsequently staged major concerts, including 90 Minutes with Asiama and 9Ti Mins with the Suns, helping expand his profile within the industry.
His breakthrough gained wider recognition through his debut single Akoma, which earned him Best Male Vocal Performance and additional nominations in categories including Record of the Year and Audio Engineer of the Year.
Looking ahead, the musician revealed he is currently working on a new EP, which he described as an important project reflecting his early journey and artistic identity.
According to him, each song on the project represents a chapter of his personal and musical story, laying the foundation for what he hopes will be a lasting career.
