Severe flooding in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region has left one person dead, another missing, and displaced more than 4,000 residents following days of continuous rainfall.
The floods have submerged several communities, forcing families to abandon their homes and seek safety elsewhere. Schools have also been affected as rising waters continue to disrupt daily life across the municipality.
The Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Karim Ndego, confirmed that three people were swept away in separate incidents linked to the flooding.
One of the victims, 52-year-old Joseph Dwamena Boateng, lost his life after attempting to cross the swollen Boinso River while returning from a nearby village. He was carried away by the strong current before rescuers could reach him.
His body was later recovered and deposited at the morgue, while police investigations continue.
Search Continues for Missing Man
A search is ongoing for a man popularly known as G-Boy, who remains missing after he and a friend were swept away while trying to cross a flooded river near Achimfo.
According to reports, the two men had spent the night in Tiboahkrom after heavy rains caused the river to overflow. The following morning, they attempted to cross despite the dangerous conditions.
Both were swept downstream by the strong current. One of the men, Patrick Amoabeng, survived and later raised the alarm.
“I was lucky to escape,” Amoabeng said. “I managed to call for help. Community members searched for my friend, but they could not find him. Up till now, he is still missing.”
Rescue Efforts Hampered
Mr. Ndego said efforts to locate the missing man have been challenging due to the size of the river and limited rescue equipment.
“The river is very large, and the rescue operation requires equipment that we currently do not have. We are working closely with the security agencies and other stakeholders to locate the missing person,” he explained.
The Enchi Municipal Fire Commander, Rev. Father Emmanuel Kwaku Yeboah ADO III, said emergency responders remain on high alert and are intensifying search efforts.
He urged residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers and streams and to prioritise their safety during the ongoing rains.
“We urge residents to avoid taking unnecessary risks during this period. People should also inform relatives of their movements whenever they travel so assistance can be provided quickly in emergencies,” he advised.
Communities Count Their Losses
For many residents, the floods have caused extensive damage to homes, livelihoods and infrastructure, leaving families struggling to recover.
As authorities continue rescue and relief operations, affected communities are appealing for support while hoping for improved weather conditions to ease the crisis.
