Akosombo substation rebuild to take months after fire — Energy Ministry

Ghana’s Ministry of Energy has revealed that it will take several months to fully rebuild the damaged Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation at Akosombo following last week’s devastating fire.

The substation, a critical component of Ghana’s electricity transmission network, was engulfed by flames on April 23, triggering widespread power disruptions across the country and raising concerns about the resilience of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Providing an update, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, said the scale of destruction particularly to the control systems that manage power distribution from the Akosombo Dam means reconstruction will be a lengthy process.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 27, Rockson emphasised that rebuilding key infrastructure will not be immediate.

“The whole control room has to be rebuilt and it will not take a day or two it will take a number of months,” he said, noting that urgent efforts are now focused on restoring electricity supply and stabilising daily life.

In the interim, authorities are implementing contingency measures, including rerouting power and exploring alternative generation sources to cushion the impact of the outage.

The extended reconstruction timeline is expected to have wider economic implications, particularly for industries and businesses that rely heavily on stable electricity supply.
