All power units restored after Akosombo fire – Energy Minister assures

Ghana’s power system has been fully restored following the recent fire at the Akosombo substation, with all generation units now back in service, according to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor.

The April 23, 2026 incident disrupted electricity supply nationwide, knocking between 720 and nearly 1,000 megawatts off the grid and forcing a temporary halt in power exports. The situation also triggered widespread outages across several regions.

In a statement shared on social media, Dr. Jinapor commended engineers and emergency teams for their swift response in restoring power.

“Through their tireless work, discipline, and commitment to country, power has been restored and system stability secured,” he said, expressing gratitude to staff of Ghana Grid Company Limited, Volta River Authority, and Electricity Company of Ghana for their coordination.

Speaking earlier at a press conference in Accra on April 27, the Minister had assured that all six generation units would be operational by the end of the week. He noted that despite the loss of output from Akosombo at the time, other plants remained functional, helping to cushion the impact.

“We never anticipated it, but we will rise above this,” he said, adding that the restoration process was progressing steadily, with units being brought online in phases.

Meanwhile, the government has initiated investigations into the incident. As part of the process, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company Limited, Mark Awuah Baah, has been asked to step aside.

The directive was communicated by the Minister of Information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who also confirmed a broader leadership shake-up within the Ashanti operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

The changes follow significant outages in the Ashanti Region, where homes, businesses, and industrial areas were affected in the aftermath of the Akosombo disruption.

Authorities say a nationwide audit of energy infrastructure is underway to strengthen the resilience of Ghana’s power system and prevent future incidents.
