MTN Ghana not leaving GhanMTN Ghana has dismissed concerns that it could scale down or exit the Ghanaian market following recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where its parent company is headquartered.

The company’s Chief Internal Audit and Forensics Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, said MTN remains fully committed to Ghana and has no plans to leave the country.

Speaking at the 2026 MTN Media and Stakeholder Forum in Takoradi, organised for journalists from the Central and Western regions, Gbewonyo stressed that Ghana continues to be one of the company’s most important markets.

“MTN is here to stay. We are not going anywhere,” he said, dismissing suggestions that the company could reconsider its operations in Ghana because of the unrest in South Africa.

    MTN reaffirms commitment to Ghana

Gbewonyo said MTN would continue investing in network expansion, digital inclusion and innovation while partnering the government and other stakeholders to support Ghana’s digital and economic transformation.

He noted that the company’s commitment over the past 30 years is reflected in its contribution to national development through tax payments, job creation and corporate social responsibility programmes.

He also cited MTN Ghana’s decision to list part of its shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange and the work of the MTN Ghana Foundation as further evidence of its long-term investment in the country.

    Company highlights economic impact

Reflecting on MTN’s three decades of operations in Ghana, Gbewonyo thanked customers, employees, business partners, communities, the media and other stakeholders for their continued support.

He said the company’s success has been built on accountability, transparency, responsible business practices and customer-focused service delivery.

According to him, feedback from stakeholders has helped MTN improve its services, bridge the digital divide, support businesses and connect more people across the country.

Gbewonyo disclosed that MTN contributes about 6% of Ghana’s total tax revenue, underscoring the company’s significant role in the national economy.

    Foundation continues community support

He said the MTN Ghana Foundation has supported thousands of young people through scholarship programmes and other initiatives.

“Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, thousands of young people have received scholarships and support to pursue their dreams.”

He added that the Foundation’s investments in healthcare, education and economic empowerment continue to improve lives in communities across the Western and Central regions and other parts of Ghana.

“We are proud of our achievements, not because of the size of our business, but because of the impact we have made together,” he said.

Gbewonyo also thanked the media for highlighting community issues, providing constructive feedback and helping to hold the company accountable.

He pledged that MTN would continue working closely with stakeholders to build on the progress made over the past 30 years and create greater value for Ghanaians.
