Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered outside the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Monday, July 13, to demand the immediate release of the party’s communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
The protest follows reports that Mr. Aboagye was arrested on Saturday at Kotoka International Airport by officers of EOCO with the assistance of personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service.
NPP questions circumstances of arrest
According to the NPP, the circumstances surrounding Mr Aboagye’s arrest remain unclear.
The party claims the investigative agencies have not disclosed the reasons for his detention.
It has also alleged that Mr Aboagye has been denied access to his legal representatives since his arrest. At the time of publication, EOCO and the Ghana Immigration Service had not publicly responded to those allegations.
Supporters demand explanation
The reported arrest has heightened tensions between the opposition party and the state investigative agencies.
Scores of NPP supporters converged on the EOCO headquarters to express solidarity with Mr Aboagye and demand his immediate release.
The party first made the allegations public through its General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, in a Facebook post on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
In the statement, Mr Kodua alleged that EOCO officers, assisted by officials of the Ghana Immigration Service, arrested Mr. Aboagye at the airport and called for his immediate release.
Since then, senior NPP officials and supporters have continued to urge EOCO to explain the legal basis for the detention and ensure that Mr. Aboagye’s constitutional rights, including access to legal counsel, are respected.
