UK publishes guide for applying for visitor visa without travel agents

The UK government has published an official guide explaining how people can apply online for a Standard Visitor visa without using a travel agent or third-party service provider.

The step-by-step guidance, available on the government’s official website, outlines the application process, eligibility requirements, timelines and visa fees for prospective visitors.

The government says applicants must complete and submit their online application before travelling to the UK. Applications cannot be submitted more than three months before the intended travel date.

    Applicants must attend visa appointment

According to the guidance, everyone applying for a Standard Visitor visa must attend an appointment at a visa application centre to provide the required information and documents.

The government also states that a parent, guardian or another authorised person may complete an application on behalf of a child or someone who cannot apply independently.

Where families are travelling together, each applicant must submit a separate application and pay the required visa fee.

    Visa fees and validity

The Standard Visitor visa costs £135 and allows eligible travellers to stay in the UK for up to six months.

Applicants travelling for medical treatment may apply for an 11-month visa, which costs £234.

Academics are also eligible for a 12-month Standard Visitor visa at the same fee of £234.

For frequent travellers, the UK offers long-term Standard Visitor visas that permit multiple entries. However, each individual visit must not exceed six months.

The fees for long-term visitor visas are:

    • Two-year visa: £506
    • Five-year visa: £903
    • Ten-year visa: £1,128

    Direct applications can reduce costs

The publication of the guide is expected to benefit many applicants across Africa who often rely on travel agents to complete visa applications.

By applying directly through the official UK government platform, applicants can avoid additional service charges from third parties while maintaining full control over their applications.

The guidance also forms part of the UK government’s broader efforts to provide clearer information on immigration procedures, including updates on visa requirements and supporting documents for different visa categories.

Prospective applicants are advised to carefully review the official guidance and ensure they have all the required documents before beginning their application.
