Ghana has congratulated Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, on his election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reaffirming its commitment to supporting his leadership of the regional bloc.

In a Facebook post on Monday, July 20, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa conveyed the government’s best wishes to President Faye following his election.

Ablakwa expressed confidence in President Faye’s ability to lead ECOWAS through the region’s current challenges and wished him wisdom and success in his new role.

“Ghana congratulates the newly elected Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal,” he wrote.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Senegal and supporting initiatives that promote regional peace, security and development.

“President Faye can always count on Ghana’s principled support and genuine cooperation,” Ablakwa added.

President Faye was elected Chairman of ECOWAS during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday, July 19.

The summit brought together regional leaders to discuss key political, economic and security issues affecting West Africa.

He succeeds Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who served as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority.

President Faye assumes office at a critical time for the regional bloc as ECOWAS continues to confront terrorism, political instability and the challenges of deepening economic integration.

The organisation is also seeking to redefine its relationship with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following the three countries’ withdrawal from the bloc.
