Korle Bu asks Mzbel to provide details over hospital bed denial claim

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has appealed to musician and media personality Mzbel to provide additional information following claims that a relative died after allegedly being denied a hospital bed.

The hospital says it has taken the allegations seriously and has begun efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

    Hospital seeks clarification

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, management said attempts to contact Mzbel and her family since the video surfaced on social media have been unsuccessful.

According to the hospital, it is trying to determine whether the deceased was referred to Korle Bu and denied admission upon arrival or whether the patient had not yet been transferred and was instead advised to wait until a bed became available.

“As at the time of this notice, the Hospital has not been able to engage the family directly to verify the facts. Management is calling on Mzbel to provide the necessary information to enable us to investigate the claims made in the video,” the statement said.

    Commitment to emergency care

Korle Bu stressed that it remains committed to the government’s policy that no public hospital should refuse emergency cases.

The hospital recalled that following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, its Board instructed management to ensure strict compliance with the policy. It added that the Minister for Health has since reinforced the directive.

Management also disclosed that the hospital has acquired additional beds and other facilities to help reduce bed shortages.

    Investigation underway

The hospital said all clinical and emergency departments have repeatedly been reminded of their responsibility to provide emergency care in line with national policy.

It warned that any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient would constitute a serious breach of duty and would be fully investigated.

While the investigation continues, Korle Bu encouraged patients and their relatives to report concerns through its official complaints channels.

These include the hospital’s telephone exchange, its dedicated complaints line (0244 406 700), the complaints portal on its website and QR codes displayed across the facility.

According to management, complaints submitted through these channels are investigated promptly to improve service delivery and ensure timely resolution.

Korle Bu also extended its condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a fair, transparent and professional investigation into the matter.
