The National Identification Authority (NIA) has introduced a four-step process to enable Ghanaians living abroad to register for and obtain the Ghana Card.
The initiative, being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is designed to make the national identification registration process more accessible to citizens residing outside Ghana.
Step 1: Complete the online application
Applicants must begin by completing an online application through the NIA’s official registration portal and paying the required registration fee.
For applicants in the United Kingdom and other countries outside Africa, the registration fee is the equivalent of US$115.
Step 2: Attend a virtual interview
After submitting the application, applicants will participate in a virtual interview with an NIA registration officer.
During the interview, the officer will review the application and verify the applicant’s details. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation message containing a unique QR code.
Step 3: Book a biometric appointment
Applicants must then book an appointment for biometric data capture.
They are required to print the QR code received after approval and present it at the nearest Ghana Mission, where their fingerprints and other biometric details will be captured.
Step 4: Receive the Ghana Card
Once the biometric registration process is completed and the application is fully processed, the Ghana Card will be produced and made available to the applicant through the designated arrangements communicated by the NIA.
The NIA says the new system is intended to simplify access to the Ghana Card for Ghanaians living overseas, allowing them to complete much of the registration process online before visiting a Ghana Mission for biometric enrolment.
