England booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo, thanks to a late brace from captain Harry Kane.
The Three Lions looked set for a shock exit before Kane struck twice in the closing stages to rescue Thomas Tuchel’s side and set up a last-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium.
England were just 15 minutes away from one of the biggest upsets in their World Cup history after Brian Cipenga gave DR Congo the lead.
However, Kane stepped up when his team needed him most, scoring twice to complete the comeback and keep England’s World Cup hopes alive.
The victory spared Tuchel from what would have been one of England’s most embarrassing tournament defeats, alongside the loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 and the famous 1950 World Cup defeat to the United States.
Kane and Jude Bellingham have been England’s standout performers throughout the tournament.
Both players scored in Group L victories over Croatia and Panama, and they once again proved decisive against DR Congo.
Anthony Gordon also made a strong impact after coming off the bench, helping create both goals. However, Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke struggled to influence the match.
Tuchel also continues to carefully manage Bukayo Saka’s minutes as the winger recovers from an Achilles problem.
While Kane and Bellingham continue to deliver, England need more players to contribute if they are to challenge for the World Cup title.
Despite progressing, questions remain over Tuchel’s preferred starting line-up.
The England manager has frequently changed his defence and wide positions throughout the tournament, suggesting he is still searching for the right balance.
The right-back position has become a particular concern because of injuries and inconsistent performances.
Against DR Congo, Declan Rice finished the match at right-back after Djed Spence was substituted, despite being one of England’s most influential midfielders.
Tuchel’s selection problems have been made worse by injuries to Reece James, Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah.
Former England captain Alan Shearer said England looked vulnerable defensively throughout the match.
He noted that Declan Rice contributed to the equaliser after moving to right-back but questioned whether that should become a long-term solution.
Former defender Micah Richards argued that Rice is too important in midfield and suggested Ezri Konsa should start at right-back against Mexico.
Wayne Rooney also warned that England are leaving too much space when they lose possession.
According to Rooney, stronger opponents could punish those weaknesses if they are not addressed before the knockout stages.
England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium.
Although the victory over DR Congo secured progression, Tuchel knows his side will need a much-improved performance against a passionate home crowd if they are to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
