The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, also known as Akofena, in connection with the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page on Monday, June 22, the Police said Israel Safo reported himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters before officers transferred him to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters.

According to the statement, he is assisting with ongoing investigations.

    Police recover guns and ammunition

Police said officers searched the suspect’s vehicle and residence at Kwabenya.

The search led to the recovery of 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition and 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition.

Investigators also retrieved loaded magazines and two Glock pistols. One of the pistols is registered in Israel Safo’s name.

Meanwhile, further investigations led to the arrest of two other suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.

“All the suspects are currently in Police custody assisting investigations and will be put before the court on 23rd June 2026,” the Police stated.

    Adwoa Safo responding to treatment

The incident left Sarah Adwoa Safo injured after she attempted to enter her brother’s residence in Kwabenya.

However, the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo later confirmed that the former MP is in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

In a statement dated June 22, the family expressed regret over the shooting and assured members of the Kristo Asafo Mission and the public that she was recovering.

    Family outlines succession dispute

The family said the dispute stems from leadership arrangements within the Kristo Asafo Mission.

According to the statement, Apostle Kwadwo Safo appointed his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, as his successor in 2017.

However, the family alleged that several businesses under the Kristo Asafo conglomerate suffered setbacks during his tenure.

They further claimed that the late founder later revoked his mandate in 2024 and appointed Adwoa Safo as head of the family.

Following Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s death on September 11, 2025, the family said Adwoa Safo became the principal representative of the family with the support of her siblings.

Family alleges Israel Safo ignored court action

According to the family, Israel Safo and some church elders planned a private ceremony to install him as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

The family said two church members went to court and secured an application to stop the ceremony.

However, several attempts to serve the court documents reportedly failed.

The statement claimed that Adwoa Safo personally attempted to serve the documents on June 21.

The family alleged that during the encounter, Israel Safo fired several shots in her direction and instructed others to shoot at her vehicle.

    Police are investigating the allegations.

    Family rejects leadership claims

The family said it does not recognise any installation of Israel Safo that goes against the directives left by Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

It also cautioned the public against dealing with him on matters relating to the leadership, assets and affairs of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

In addition, the family said all the late apostle’s children, except Israel Safo, remain united and committed to giving their father a dignified burial.

They urged members of the church and the public to remain calm and allow state institutions to handle the matter.
