A 22-year-old man has been arrested at Sefwi Atronsu in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region for allegedly possessing human bones suspected to have been exhumed from a cemetery.

The suspect, Francis Addae, popularly known as Nana Kwame, was arrested in connection with a stealing case that is currently under investigation by the police.

During a search of his room, officers found a red and black travelling bag containing human skeletal remains. The remains included a skull, a femur and a lower jaw.

Suspect claims he found bones near cemetery

During interrogation, Francis Addae told investigators that he found the bones about a month ago while clearing a piece of land near the cemetery at Sefwi Atronsu.

According to him, he decided to keep the remains and later stored them in his room.

However, he failed to provide a convincing explanation for possessing the bones.

Subsequently, a police team led by the Sefwi Bekwai District Police Commander, DSP Peter Nartey, escorted the suspect to the cemetery.

At the cemetery, he identified a tiled grave believed to belong to the late Nana Badu, an elder of Old Atronsu Town who was buried several years ago.

Police suspect grave was tampered with

Police officers observed a hole on the side of the tomb. In addition, they found pieces of recently broken tiles nearby.

As a result, investigators suspect that the grave may have been tampered with.

Speaking to TV3, the Assembly Member for the Atronsu Electoral Area, Samuel Gyapong, confirmed the incident.

He said the suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.

    Case already before court

Meanwhile, the Western North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Dr Francis Tsidi, disclosed that the matter is already before the court.

In a text message sent to TV3’s regional correspondent, Mathew Ahiaveh, the Regional Commander said judgment in the case is expected on June 23, 2026.

    Family seeks justice

Appiah Nini, the Abusuapanin of the deceased’s family, expressed concern over the incident.

He also outlined steps being taken by the family to seek justice and ensure that the matter is thoroughly addressed.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the human remains are ongoing.
