Thomas Partey is expected to appear in court as Ghana steps up efforts to overturn Canada’s decision to deny the midfielder entry ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Arsenal midfielder has been unable to join his teammates in Canada after his visa application was refused by Canadian authorities. The decision has triggered legal and diplomatic efforts by Ghana to secure his clearance before the team’s opening World Cup fixture.
Speaking to TV3, Sports Minister Kofi Adams confirmed that the first court hearing on the matter had been scheduled as Ghana pursues multiple legal avenues to challenge the decision.
Ghana Pursues Legal Challenge
According to the Sports Minister, Ghana’s legal team has filed three separate actions aimed at overturning the visa refusal.
The applications reportedly include a request for judicial review as well as a fresh application seeking approval for Partey’s entry into Canada.
Mr. described the decision as unfair and argued that the midfielder has not been convicted of any offence.
Government officials remain hopeful that the legal process will result in a favourable ruling that allows Partey to join the Black Stars during the tournament.
Visa Refusal Linked to UK Criminal Charges
International media reports indicate that Canada’s decision is linked to criminal charges currently facing Partey in the United Kingdom.
The Ghana international has pleaded not guilty to all charges and the case has not yet gone to trial.

Reports suggest Canadian law permits authorities to deny entry in certain criminal-related circumstances, even when there has been no conviction.
FIFA Distances Itself from Decision
FIFA has reportedly confirmed that Partey’s visa application was refused by the Canadian government.
The world football governing body also stressed that immigration and visa decisions remain the sole responsibility of host countries and fall outside FIFA’s control.
As a result, the matter remains a legal issue between Ghana and Canadian authorities rather than a sporting dispute.
Impact on Ghana’s World Cup Campaign
Partey’s absence is a significant setback for the Black Stars as they prepare for their World Cup campaign.
The midfielder had already been cleared to enter the United States, where Ghana conducted part of its preparations. However, the visa refusal affects his ability to travel to Canada for matches scheduled there, including Ghana’s opening fixture against Panama in Toronto.
Despite the setback, officials remain optimistic that the issue can be resolved quickly.
A favourable court ruling would allow Partey to join the squad and strengthen Ghana’s chances as the team seeks to advance beyond the group stage.
For now, the Black Stars continue their preparations while awaiting the outcome of the legal proceedings, which could determine whether one of Ghana’s most influential players is available for the tournament.
