The Government of Ghana has repatriated 327 Ghanaian nationals who were left stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a demolition exercise in Port Bouët, a municipality in Abidjan.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 12, 2026, the affected Ghanaians were residing in areas impacted by an ongoing demolition exercise carried out by local authorities in Port Bouët.

The Ministry said the exercise displaced hundreds of residents, leaving many Ghanaians without shelter, livelihoods and the means to secure alternative accommodation.

The Ministry disclosed that 228 Ghanaian nationals had already been successfully repatriated and arrived in Ghana on Thursday, June 11.

Arrangements were subsequently completed for the remaining returnees to travel home on Friday, June 12, bringing the total number of affected Ghanaians to 327.

“The Government of Ghana is repatriating three hundred and twenty-seven (327) Ghanaians who were affected by the ongoing mass demolition exercise being undertaken by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire,” the statement said.

To facilitate their return, the Government provided buses and trucks to transport both the affected nationals and their belongings back to Ghana at no cost.

The Ministry noted that the support was aimed at ensuring the safe and orderly return of the displaced citizens.

The Ministry also revealed that Ivorian authorities had indicated their willingness to compensate those affected by the demolition exercise.

It said Ghana would continue to engage the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the promised compensation is paid to the affected Ghanaian nationals.

“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals,” the statement noted.

Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate with relevant authorities and stakeholders to support affected citizens and monitor developments.

The Ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad and pledged to provide the necessary support to aid the reintegration of those returning home.

It also expressed appreciation to the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire and other stakeholders for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation process.

The Ministry assured the public that further updates on the situation would be communicated as necessary.
