Workers of the National Identification Authority under the Public Services Workers’ Union have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike over unresolved concerns regarding their working conditions.
The industrial action follows the expiration of a seven-day strike notice earlier issued by the mother union. In a directive released by the NIA Division of the union, members across the country were instructed to fully comply with the strike action until their demands are addressed.
According to the union, no member was expected to report to work from Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
“You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” part of the statement read.
Prior to the strike, workers had also been directed to wear red clothing or red armbands to work on Monday, May 11 and Tuesday, May 12 as a symbol of solidarity and protest.
The union maintained that the strike would continue until authorities respond to the grievances raised by staff.
“Let there be no misunderstanding: this strike will remain in force until our collective voice is heard and our conditions are addressed,” the statement added.
Regional union officers have also been tasked with ensuring strict compliance with the directive in all regions.
The statement, jointly signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor Bismark and Divisional Chairman Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl, urged workers to remain united throughout the industrial action.
The strike is expected to disrupt operations at NIA offices nationwide, including Ghana Card registration, replacement and update services, unless government officials and union leaders reach an agreement.
