David Wuaku, Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, has reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to delivering sustainable financial support for sports development in Ghana, while emphasising the importance of positioning sports as a key component of the country’s broader national development strategy.
Dr Wuaku clarified that the Sports Fund’s core responsibility is to mobilise and provide financing, while technical agencies and government ministries remain responsible for infrastructure development and project execution.
According to him, funding allocations for sports infrastructure projects will be coordinated through inter-agency and inter-ministerial structures established to ensure proper implementation and oversight.
Dr Wuaku acknowledged that the nationwide expansion of sports infrastructure and programmes cannot be achieved within a short timeframe, stressing that the process will require gradual and sustained investment over time.
He explained that the Fund intends to adopt a phased development approach, beginning with targeted initiatives that can be expanded progressively across the country.
Beyond infrastructure and competitions, Dr Wuaku argued that sports should be viewed as an important avenue for professional development, job creation, wealth generation, and economic transformation.
He noted that the long-term vision is to integrate sports development into successive national development plans so that sports facilities and programmes evolve into economically valuable assets capable of contributing meaningfully to national growth.
According to him, the broader objective is to reposition sports not merely as entertainment or periodic events, but as a strategic sector with the potential to drive value creation and socio-economic development.
The remarks come amid ongoing national discussions on sports financing, infrastructure modernisation, and the role of sports in youth development and economic diversification.
