President of Academic City University, Prof. Fred McBagonluri, has raised concerns over the location of the newly opened CM China Mall near Ghana’s international airport, warning that the development poses potential national security risks and raises questions about the country’s sovereignty.
According to Prof. McBagonluri, airports are strategic national assets and key entry points into every country, making developments around such facilities a matter of serious security consideration.
His comments follow the opening of the new CM China Mall situated opposite Accra Mall in Accra.
He questioned how such a major commercial facility could be established close to a sensitive national installation without broader concerns being raised about the country’s security architecture.
“An airport is a security asset and an entry point into our country,” he stated, adding that the location of the China Mall suggests that “something is fundamentally wrong with our national security and sovereignty.”
The remarks have sparked debate among sections of the public, with some supporting his concerns while others view the development as a normal commercial investment within an urban area.
Prof. McBagonluri stressed the need for authorities to critically examine planning decisions involving strategic national infrastructure and the long-term implications for national security.
The CM China Mall recently opened for business and is expected to attract traders, shoppers and businesses operating within Accra and beyond.
