Mosengo-Omba enters race for DR Congo FA presidency with reform agenda

Former Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association, setting the stage for a competitive election.

Mosengo-Omba submitted his nomination on April 21, 2026, in Kinshasa, marking the close of the nomination period ahead of the elective General Assembly scheduled for May 20.

In a statement shared on social media, the former CAF executive outlined an ambitious vision to overhaul Congolese football, focusing on long-term structure, governance, and sustainability.

“There are moments when we deeply feel the need to return to what truly matters,” he wrote, evoking the image of children playing football in cities such as Lubumbashi, Kisangani, and Bukavu. He described these grassroots beginnings as the “soul of Congolese football.”

Mosengo-Omba questioned whether the country’s football achievements are built on a solid foundation or merely moments of individual brilliance. He argued that sustained success requires deliberate planning and institutional strength.

“A great football nation cannot depend on chance. It must be built on organisation, vision, and continuity,” he stated.

Presenting his campaign slogan “Rebuild to structure. Structure to win” he pledged to reform key areas including governance, competitions, and player development systems.

His vision, he said, is to create “a Congolese football that is sustainable, credible, and successful,” while emphasizing unity across all 26 provinces of the country.

Mosengo-Omba joins a growing list of contenders, including former DR Congo international Shabani Nonda, who is campaigning on strengthening both domestic and international football structures.

Other candidates in the race include Aziz Makukula, Max Mayaka, Lord Ndiwa Kanganal, and Kevin Issa, all of whose applications were validated on April 21.

With nominations now closed, the Electoral Commission will review submissions before publishing the final list of approved candidates for the highly anticipated vote.
