The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked a passenger bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 pm.

According to a police statement, patrol teams responded to distress calls and rushed to the scene, where they found a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20. The vehicle, carrying about 30 football players and officials travelling from Samreboi to Berekum, had veered into a nearby bush while attempting to escape from six armed men. Three of the attackers were reportedly armed with pump-action shotguns.

During the attack, a player identified as Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500 during the incident. Police also retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to aid ongoing investigations.

The Regional Police Command has since deployed additional officers and crime scene investigators to the area as part of intensified efforts to track down the suspects.

Authorities say they are confident the perpetrators will be arrested soon, urging the public to remain calm and assist with any relevant information.

“The public is urged to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police while investigations continue,” the statement added.
