Ghana’s aviation sector is set for a significant boost as the government pushes ahead with the redevelopment of Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport.

The redevelopment of Terminal 2 at Accra International Airport is progressing steadily, with major portions of the project expected to be completed by July 2026.

During a working visit, the Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari inspected progress on the facility and engaged airline operators on how the upgraded terminal will operate once completed.

The refurbished terminal is expected to play a dual role, handling both domestic and some international flights, as authorities work to ease pressure on existing infrastructure, particularly Terminal 3.

“You have gone with me on tour with all the airlines, and we have seen the kind of remodelling we are doing to this terminal,” the Minister told stakeholders during the inspection.

“We hope that when we are done, by July [2026], the contractors have told me they will work according to schedule to ensure a new terminal which plays a dual role: domestic and international terminal.”

The redevelopment forms part of a broader modernisation plan for the airport, with the entire project estimated to cost about $15 million.

The government also announced that a sod-cutting ceremony for a new airport concourse is expected to take place in April, with construction projected to take about 14 months to complete.

According to the Minister, airline operators will remain central to the design and operational plans of the facility once it becomes fully functional.

“I want to let the airline owners know that after July, some of them will be brought to this terminal. They make our airport function, and we want to work with them,” he said.

“That is why we’ve taken time to go around with them, for them to see the work so far, so that they can tell us areas they are not satisfied with. We are ready as a government to bring improvement to suit whatever plans they will want,” he emphasised.

The upgrades come at a time when passenger traffic through Ghana’s main international gateway continues to grow.

The airport handled more than 3.2 million passengers in 2024, reflecting its rising importance as a regional aviation hub in West Africa.

The Minister also stressed that the project is receiving close attention from the highest levels of government.

“Let me assure you that the President is not only telling us his vision, but he is actively participating in giving us direction as to what to do, to make sure that we fast-track work and make traveling comfortable for passengers.”
