Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has unveiled a comprehensive list of 12 key privileges now enjoyed by holders of the country’s improved passport, underscoring the nation’s strides in modernising its travel document and enhancing global mobility for its citizens.

Speaking in a series of social media posts, Ablakwa described the upgraded passport now chip-embedded and fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards as one of the most secure and globally valued travel documents available. The reforms, he said, reflect Ghana’s commitment to efficiency, affordability, and international recognition.

    1. Modern, Secure Travel Document

The new passport features state-of-the-art technology as an ICAO-compliant chip-embedded booklet, elevating Ghana’s travel credentials on the global stage.

    2. Advanced Security Features

With over 170 advanced security elements integrated, the enhanced passport is designed to resist forgery and improve authenticity verification worldwide.

    3. Expanded Visa Waiver Access

Ablakwa highlighted that Ghanaian passport holders now benefit from approximately 50 visa waivers or visa-free/visa-on-arrival arrangements across all continents a clear indication of growing global mobility.

    4. Nationwide Accessibility

For the first time in Ghana’s history, citizens can obtain the improved passport in all 16 regions of the country, eliminating previous geographic barriers.

    5. Faster Processing Times

Applicants can now expect their passports in less than 15 days, a marked improvement over past waiting periods.

    6. Free Courier Delivery

Passports are delivered directly to applicants without additional delivery charges, bringing convenience to every part of the country.

    7. Reduced Fees

The government has cut passport fees from GHS500 to GHS350, making travel documents more affordable while still upgrading service and security.

    8. Same-Day Service Option

A historic same-day application and delivery service has been introduced to meet urgent travel needs.

    9. Backlog Clearance

Ablakwa noted that the ministry successfully cleared an inherited backlog of over 40,000 undelivered passports, ensuring more efficient service for applicants.

    10. Enhanced Administrative Tools

Investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced tools have been deployed to strengthen the passport administration system and safeguard data integrity.

    11. New Visa Agreements in the Pipeline

More visa waiver agreements are expected to be negotiated with friendly nations throughout the year, promising even greater travel freedom for Ghanaians.

    12. Full Government Protection

Holders of the improved Ghanaian passport are assured of enhanced consular services and protection by the Government of Ghana while abroad.

A Passport Poised for Global Relevance

The modernisation of Ghana’s passport from its technical robustness to its service-oriented delivery model  appears to significantly elevate the country’s global mobility profile. With quicker processing, broader reach, and growing international acceptance, the document is fast becoming a valued asset for citizens aspiring to travel, work, or study abroad.

As Ghana continues to expand its diplomatic and visa-free arrangements, these reforms signal a strategic push to support the movement of people, foster international engagement, and strengthen the nation’s global footprint.
