Re-electing Bawumia As NPP Flagbearer Would Be A “Trainwreck” Frimpong-Boateng Warns

Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against re-electing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential flagbearer, warning that such a decision could severely damage the party’s future.

Speaking in an interview, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng expressed deep concern about the current direction of the NPP, saying the party no longer represents the values he once believed in and served.

He strongly criticised the party’s internal electoral processes, alleging that the selection of its previous presidential candidate was marred by intimidation, bribery, and undue pressure on delegates.

According to him, such practices signal the early stages of institutional corruption and have no place in a serious political organisation.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also questioned the party’s failure to examine the reasons behind its heavy electoral defeat critically. He argued that attempting to present the same candidate again, without addressing the underlying problems that led to the loss, would be a major political error.

“The party lost badly, yet we have not honestly confronted the issues that caused the defeat. Going back with the same flagbearer under these circumstances would be disastrous,” he stated.

While distancing his comments from personal attacks, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng described Dr. Bawumia as a “nice person,” but stressed that good character alone does not automatically translate into effective national leadership.

He further advised the former Vice President to openly dissociate himself from individuals he believes were responsible for the economic challenges under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, if he intends to win back public trust.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng made it clear that his remarks were driven by concern for the future of the NPP and the need for the party to rebuild credibility with Ghanaians.
