Yaw Siki says Hip Hop influenced his smoking habit

Ghanaian hiplife artiste turned evangelist, Yaw Siki, has revealed that his early exposure to hip hop culture played a major role in his smoking habit.

In an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio, the ‘Wope Dodo’ hitmaker shared that his curiosity about smoking weed began during his deep interest in hip hop music.

According to him, his admiration for underground and West Coast hip hop artistes influenced his desire to experiment with smoking. He explained that many of the musicians he followed frequently referenced weed in their lyrics, which shaped his perception and curiosity.

Yaw Siki noted that although he began consuming alcohol during his junior high school years, he only started smoking in senior high school.

Reflecting on his past, he said his upbringing also contributed to some of his habits. He recalled being introduced to hip hop by his elder brother, while his early exposure to alcohol came from being sent to purchase it for his mother.

Following his life-changing experience after surviving a serious motor accident about 13 years ago, Yaw Siki became a born-again Christian and transitioned from secular music to gospel ministry.

As part of his new lifestyle, he has chosen to shield his children from secular music. He explained that he restricts media content in his home to Christian or “clean” programming to prevent similar influences.

Since leaving mainstream hiplife, Yaw Siki has focused on gospel music and recently released an EP titled Divine Selection. The project features songs such as Advice, Knock Knock, Prayer Meeting and Work in Progress.
