Three students to be arraigned over assault on Obrachire SHS pupil — Police

Three students from Swedru School of Business have been arrested and are expected to be arraigned in connection with the violent assault of a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School, local police confirmed, following a highly publicised viral video of the attack.

According to an update from the Ghana Police Service and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the trio was handed over to law enforcement at the Swedru Divisional Police Command late on Monday, February 23, after high‑level engagements between CID leadership and school authorities.

The suspects Joseph Amoh, 20; Benedict Appiah, 18; and Bilal Mamud, 18, were formally arrested to assist with ongoing investigations into the beating, which occurred during the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru on February 19, 2026.

Police say the assault captured on video and widely circulated on social media shows a group of students physically attacking the Obrachire pupil, prompting widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

The injured student was hospitalised with facial injuries and a broken tooth and has since spoken publicly about the incident, insisting he did nothing to provoke the attack.

The Central Regional Police Command condemned the conduct and urged the public, especially students, to refrain from violence.

“The suspects were arrested and will be put before the court,” a statement from the Central Regional Command said, adding that investigations are ongoing.

The arrests follow stern action from the CID Director‑General, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, who earlier gave school authorities a 24‑hour ultimatum to produce those responsible after reviewing the viral video evidence.

In response to the disturbances, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Central Region has suspended all inter‑school sporting competitions until further notice, citing serious threats to student safety and the spirit of healthy competition.

The directive took immediate effect on February 22, 2026, and will remain in place as authorities review safety protocols and stakeholder consultations continue.
