REGSEC launches 3-day demolition exercise at Sakumono Ramsar site

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a renewed demolition exercise at the Sakumono Ramsar Site as authorities intensify efforts to protect the environmentally sensitive area from encroachment.

The operation is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, April 28 to Thursday, April 30, 2026, and will focus on removing illegal structures within the protected wetland in the Tema West enclave.

The move forms part of broader interventions to address increasing environmental degradation caused by unapproved construction activities, waste disposal, and rapid urban expansion.

Speaking at the first meeting of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council for 2026 on April 26, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, said the wetland has significantly reduced in size over the years due to human activity.

She noted that REGSEC, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission Ghana and the Tema West Municipal Assembly, will carry out the exercise to clear unauthorised developments within the core zone of the Ramsar site.

“REGSEC will support the Forestry Commission and the Tema West Municipal Assembly to undertake a demolition exercise to remove unauthorised structures within the core zone… next week there will be another demolition exercise within Tema and other areas,” she said.

Madam Ocloo issued a strong warning to developers and land users, urging strict compliance with environmental regulations.

“Accordingly, I wish to send a clear warning to all developers and prospective land users to refrain from any form of activities within the Sakumono Ramsar Site and other Ramsar sites,” she cautioned.

Authorities say the enforcement action is part of ongoing efforts to preserve Ghana’s Ramsar sites and protect critical wetlands from further destruction.
