OliveTheBoy says mother opposed his music career

Ghanaian singer OliveTheBoy has opened up about the challenges he faced in pursuing a music career, revealing that his mother strongly opposed his decision and even threatened to have him arrested before he released his first project.

Speaking on 3Xtra’s On The Line Podcast, the GoodSin hitmaker said his love for music began at a very young age after listening to his mother’s cassette recordings.

“I knew about composing music way before. I was even a kid six, five, four. I knew about it because I had listened to my mom’s songs,” he said.

According to the singer, constantly listening to his mother’s music introduced him to songwriting and inspired his passion for creating music.

Despite that early inspiration, OliveTheBoy said his mother hoped he would pursue a different career. As a child, he also dreamed of becoming a doctor, but his growing love for music eventually changed his ambitions.

“I just decided to be a stubborn boy. I had to because I fell in love with music. I fell in love with being a musician. I fell in love with the fact that I could write music,” he said.

He explained that by 2020 or 2021, he had completed his first extended play (EP), marking the beginning of his professional music journey.

Recalling his mother’s reaction, OliveTheBoy said she was unhappy when she discovered he was preparing to release the project.

“I’ve said it many times. She tried to arrest me. She said she would arrest me, but then around that time I knew it was bollocks because I was 18 already. I hadn’t told her anything. She just got to know that I was releasing,” he recounted.

The singer’s remarks offer insight into the personal struggles behind his rise in the Ghanaian music industry, highlighting the determination that helped him pursue his passion despite family opposition.
