The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has signed a data collaboration agreement with twenty-five Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to improve Ghana’s national data system.

The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during a high-level ceremony held at Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra on March 12. The partnership is intended to strengthen the use of reliable data in government decision-making.

The initiative seeks to close important data gaps by connecting administrative data systems across public institutions. Through improved data sharing and adherence to national statistical standards, GSS and its partners aim to produce more accurate and timely insights into the country’s development progress.

Speaking at the event, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said the ceremony represented more than just a formal agreement. He noted that the collaboration is designed to reinforce evidence-based governance and help build a more coordinated, transparent, and data-driven public sector.

Several key institutions are part of the agreement, including core ministries such as the Interior, Education, Communications, Trade, and Lands and Natural Resources ministries. Agencies involved include the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Technology and oversight bodies participating in the initiative include the National Communications Authority and the National Information Technology Agency.

Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu explained that although GSS already has the legal authority to lead the National Statistical System, the new MoUs provide a practical structure to make that mandate effective.

He added that the agreements will help convert administrative data generated across government institutions into reliable official statistics.

The ceremony was attended by several stakeholders, including Evans Aggrey-Darkoh, Head of the Civil Service, and Zia Choudhury, the UN Resident Coordinator, highlighting the significance of strong data systems for both national development and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
