GNFS averts disaster after diesel tanker crash on Konongo–Accra Highway

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has prevented a major disaster after a fuel tanker crashed and spilled diesel on the Konongo–Accra Highway.

The incident happened on Tuesday, May 19, at Odumasi Three Lane near Konongo in the Ashanti Region. The tanker, a Shacman vehicle with registration number GE 1337-18, was carrying about 54,000 litres of diesel.

A statement from the GNFS Ashanti Regional Public Relations Office said firefighters from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Command responded quickly to the scene.

One male victim had already been rescued by bystanders and sent to a health facility before emergency crews arrived.

The fire officers used water and foam to cover the spilled fuel. This helped remove the risk of fire or explosion.

They also managed to recover about 18,000 litres of diesel from the damaged tanker.

No deaths were recorded. However, authorities say investigations are ongoing to find out what caused the crash.
