Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the age of 33.

According to reports, Awuche passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.

His death comes just weeks after businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama pledged to fully fund his medical care following a public appeal for assistance.

Health deteriorated due to gigantism complications

Awuche’s condition reportedly worsened after suffering complications related to gigantism.

He was initially treated at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu before doctors referred him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for specialist care.

According to his family, doctors later recommended the amputation of his left leg after a severe infection caused part of the limb to deteriorate.

    Ibrahim Mahama pledged medical support

Following public appeals for financial assistance, Ibrahim Mahama stepped in to support Awuche’s treatment.

In an earlier Facebook post, Ibrahim Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, confirmed that the businessman had committed to covering all of Awuche’s medical expenses.

“On behalf of Mr Ibrahim Mahama, I have reached out to Awuche and his family to assure them of our full support during this challenging time.”

    He added:

“Mr Ibrahim Mahama has pledged to fully cover Awuche’s hospital bills, including the costs of his medical treatment and surgery.”

Rafik Mahama also disclosed that arrangements had been made to transport Awuche to the Tamale Teaching Hospital on July 8, 2026, where he began receiving specialised medical treatment.

    Remembering Awuche

Awuche, who hailed from Gambaga in the North East Region, was believed to stand at approximately 7 feet 8 inches, making him widely regarded as Ghana’s tallest man.

He had reportedly lived with gigantism for several years but was unable to access specialised treatment because of financial difficulties.

His public appeal for help attracted widespread attention across Ghana, prompting individuals and organisations to contribute towards his medical care.

His passing has been met with sadness, with many Ghanaians expressing condolences to his family and remembering the resilience he showed throughout his battle with illness.
