Ga South Brigade residents cry out over sewage overflow and poor drainage system

Residents of Ga South Brigade in the Ga South Municipal District are calling for urgent intervention over a worsening sewage overflow and poor drainage system affecting their community.

They say the area has no properly engineered drainage network, causing wastewater and sewage to flow into homes, walkways, and open spaces.

Speaking to JoyNews, resident Jonathan Tetteh described the situation as a long-standing problem that has persisted for nearly a year without a lasting solution.

He explained that the terrain of the area worsens the situation, as wastewater from higher ground flows downhill through makeshift drains with no proper outlet.

According to him, a neighbour allegedly installed PVC pipes to channel wastewater, but the system ends near his residence, causing sewage to overflow into his compound.

Residents say they are now forced to wade through wastewater just to access their homes, describing the situation as unsafe and distressing.

They also report a persistent stench in the area, along with mosquito breeding caused by stagnant wastewater, making outdoor activities and children’s play difficult.

Mr Tetteh said repeated complaints to municipal authorities have not produced any lasting solution, despite several visits and assurances.

He added that follow-ups with environmental health officers and other local officials have also yielded little progress.

Attempts to escalate the issue through the local Member of Parliament and other stakeholders have similarly not resolved the problem, leaving residents frustrated.

The community is therefore urging the Ga South Municipal Assembly to act urgently and construct a properly designed drainage system.

They warn that continued delays could worsen sanitation conditions and increase public health risks in the area.
