Ernest Nuamah returns to Lyon training after year-long injury layoff

Ernest Nuamah has returned to first-team training with Olympique Lyonnais after spending nearly a year on the sidelines through injury.

The Black Stars forward has been out of competitive action since April 2025 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a league fixture against Lille OSC.

Nuamah sustained the setback in the fifth minute of the match following a challenge involving Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson, an injury that forced him into a lengthy rehabilitation period.

Now fully back with the squad, the 22-year-old received a warm welcome from teammates as training resumed. He returned alongside Malick Fofana and Rémi Himbert, who have also spent several months recovering from injuries.

Nuamah is expected to be considered for Lyon’s upcoming fixture against Stade Rennais FC on May 3.

His return comes at a crucial time as he seeks to re-enter contention for Ghana’s squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with less than 45 days remaining before the tournament.

New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has indicated that only deserving players will make the final selection, with the deadline to submit Ghana’s squad set for June 1.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars will be targeting a place in the knockout phase for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
