Grammy-winning songwriter and artist Talay Riley has died after being stabbed in East London, prompting a murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
Riley, whose real name was Mark Orabiyi, was found with multiple stab wounds at a property on Rayleigh Road in Silvertown on Friday morning. Police were called to the scene at around 9:00 a.m. following reports of a stabbing.
The 35-year-old was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A second man, believed to be in his 20s, also sustained stab wounds during the incident. He remains in hospital, although police say his injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing.
Detectives have launched a murder investigation and initially arrested three people on suspicion of murder. A 27-year-old man has since been released on bail pending further inquiries, while a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were released without further action.
Talay Riley was widely respected within the music industry for his songwriting and production work with some of the world’s biggest artists.
In 2014, he co-wrote Dua Lipa’s single Last Dance, one of the standout tracks from the singer’s early catalogue. His impressive songwriting résumé also included credits for artists such as Chris Brown, Nick Jonas, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, David Guetta, Khalid and Zendaya.
He also co-wrote Khalid’s breakthrough hit Young Dumb & Broke and contributed to Who Do You Love by The Chainsmokers.
Throughout his career, Riley toured extensively in the UK and the United States alongside major names in grime and R&B, including Skepta, Usher and Trey Songz.
In a statement, Riley’s family described him as a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend whose warmth and talent touched countless lives.
“Mark was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. He brought love, light and joy to our family and to all who knew him,” the family said.
“We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit and remarkable talent. His presence touched many lives and his memory will remain in our hearts forever.”
His brother, singer Scribz Riley, shared an emotional tribute on social media, revealing that the two had spoken about their future plans just hours before the tragedy.
“My heart is shattered. This doesn’t feel real. It feels like a bad dream,” he wrote.
He described Talay Riley as a mentor, inspiration and source of light to many people, adding that his brother’s talent, kindness and spirit would never be forgotten.
Tributes have poured in from across the music industry following news of Riley’s death.
Singer-songwriter Craig David sent condolences to the family, saying Riley’s positive energy would continue to be felt by those who knew him.
British rapper Stormzy also paid tribute with a brief but heartfelt message, writing: “I’m sorry bro.”
California-based music company Position Music described Riley as an extraordinary songwriter and creative whose influence on music would be felt for generations.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who is leading the investigation, described the stabbing as a tragic incident and extended condolences to Riley’s family and loved ones.
She said detectives are continuing to pursue leads and urged anyone who was in the area on the morning of the incident to come forward.
Police are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have CCTV, mobile phone footage or other information that could assist the investigation.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed that emergency crews, including a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance, responded to the incident and transported Riley to a major trauma centre as a priority.
