Court Grants Bail to Former NPP Chairman Freddie Blay After Health Scare

The Koforidua High Court has granted bail to former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, in the sum of GH₵800,000. The bail conditions require two sureties.

Both of whom must be residents of Accra and possess valid Ghana Cards. The ruling follows a brief but tense period in custody, during which Mr. Blay reportedly suffered a health scare.

He was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed medical facility on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, after his blood pressure rose to dangerously high levels while in police custody, shortly after being remanded by the Akropong Circuit Court.

Sources close to the veteran politician indicated that the sudden spike in his condition was triggered by the stress of his arrest and detention.

Mr. Blay had earlier been remanded in connection with an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase. He is expected to reappear before the circuit court on April 9, 2026, as investigations into the case continue.

His arrest followed the execution of a bench warrant in Accra on Monday, March 16, 2026. According to police, the warrant was issued in April 2025 after he allegedly failed to honour multiple invitations to assist with investigations and did not appear for a scheduled court hearing.

The case centres on a parcel of land at Kitase, which Mr. Blay reportedly acquired in 1994. Prosecutors allege that he ordered the demolition of a house under construction on the disputed property.

However, his legal team has firmly rejected the claims. T.hey contend that Mr. Blay did not authorise the demolition of any building but instead directed that an undeveloped plot be cleared in January 2026 to prevent it from becoming a haven for dangerous reptiles.

The defence further argues that the matter is civil rather than criminal. They note that although the complainant previously secured a favourable ruling at the Koforidua High Court, that decision is currently under appeal.

Additionally, the defence claims that efforts to serve the complainant with court documents related to the appeal have so far been unsuccessful.
