AMA to permanently ban trading on Kaneshie footbridge after repairs

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has confirmed that trading will no longer be allowed on the Kaneshie footbridge once ongoing rehabilitation works are completed.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, emphasized that the Assembly intends to permanently remove traders from the bridge. He also noted that alternative arrangements have been made for those affected.

“I can assure you that once the bridge is completed, trading will no longer be permitted. The mayor has personally engaged with the traders and facilitated their relocation. We have secured space for many of them in nearby markets, allowing them to continue their businesses without compromising safety on the bridge,” Ankrah stated.

He added that the AMA would maintain a strong presence to enforce the ban.

“Our personnel will be stationed at the bridge to prevent any illegal activities, particularly trading. This measure is aimed at safeguarding pedestrians and maintaining public order,” he said.

Ankrah made the remarks during an interview on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on April 6.

The Kaneshie footbridge was closed on April 2 for urgent rehabilitation following safety concerns. The AMA expects the repairs to take several months and says the work will enhance both the structural integrity of the bridge and the safety of pedestrians.
