Accra Mayor Leads Push for Cleaner City with New Public Waste Bins

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun installing new public waste bins across the Central Business District (CBD) as part of efforts to improve sanitation and promote responsible waste disposal.

The initiative follows a donation of bins by Duraplast on Tuesday, March 17, aimed at supporting the Assembly’s broader campaign to strengthen waste management in the capital.

An initial batch of 20 bins has been strategically positioned along the busy Kinbu–CMB corridor, an area characterised by heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic and high levels of waste generation.

Speaking during the exercise, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said the bins were carefully sited to serve traders, commuters, and roadside operators whose daily activities contribute significantly to waste in the area.

He assured the public that the Assembly would ensure consistent waste collection, with sanitation personnel and trucks deployed daily to empty the bins and maintain cleanliness.

However, the Mayor cautioned residents against misusing the facilities, stressing that the bins are strictly for public use and not intended for household waste disposal.

He warned that individuals who transport refuse from their homes to be dumped in the bins would face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.

He further urged the public to support the initiative by using the bins responsibly, emphasising that maintaining a clean city requires collective effort.

Mr. Allotey also called on corporate institutions to partner with the Assembly in advancing sanitation efforts across Accra.

During the presentation ceremony, the Executive Director of Duraplast, Mireille Hitti, said the donation forms part of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and national development.

Mireille Hitti noted that Duraplast’s role extends beyond manufacturing to supporting initiatives that promote a cleaner and healthier environment. Describing sanitation as a major challenge in Accra.

She emphasised the importance of proper waste disposal for public health, environmental protection, and civic responsibility.

Ms. Hitti expressed optimism that the provision of additional waste bins would encourage more responsible behaviour among residents and businesses.

She also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, urging all to take ownership of their environment and support the AMA’s efforts.

She commended the leadership of the Assembly for its commitment to improving sanitation and reaffirmed Duraplast’s readiness to support similar initiatives in the future.
