The African Union’s Specialized Technical Committee on Communication and Information and Communications Technology (STC-CICT) has conferred the position of chairmanship on Ghana’s minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Honorable Sam George at the African Union (AU) Congress currently underway in Libreville, Gabon for a two-year term, beginning in October 2026.
The position of Chairmanship offers Ghana a lead role in championing continental efforts to advance digital transformation, strengthen cybersecurity cooperation, and promote Africa’s interests in the rapidly evolving global digital economy.
Accepting the prestigious position of Chairmanship conferred upon him at the 6th ordinary session of the committee, Mr Nartey described the role as a responsibility to the entire African Union rather than a privilege for Ghana.
The Minister also pledged to build consensus among member states and accelerate the implementation of the continent’s digital transformation agenda. According to Mr Nartey, although Africa had developed several strategies to guide its digital development, the continent has struggled with implementation at the required pace to meet the needs of many Africans.
The minister further identified artificial intelligence, connectivity, cyber security and data governance as key priorities that require a coordinated action by African countries.
Given the opportunity to lead, the minister pledged that Ghana’s leadership would prioritize consultation, consensus building and implementation over declarations without measurable results.
The 6th ordinary session served as an umbrella under which members and delegates from member states came together to deliberate on policies and priorities relating to communication, information and communications technology across the continent.
The vote of confidence reposed in Mr Nartey sees him succeed the immediate past chairperson of the committee, Nkoale Morosi who is currently Lesotho’s minister for Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation.
