Davido Fires Back After Critics Question His 2026 Streaming Numbers and 30BG Fanbase

Davido has responded after a content creator used Nigeria’s 2026 mid-year streaming figures to question the singer’s position in the music industry and the loyalty of his famous 30BG fanbase.

Davido has once again found himself at the center of a music debate, but this time the conversation is not about a new song, an award, or a major performance. It is about numbers. On September 15, 2026, content creator Benji sparked a fresh conversation online after drawing attention to Davido’s position on Nigeria’s list of the most-streamed Nigerian artistes for the first half of the year. Davido was ranked 12th, placing him outside the top 10, while Asake occupied the top position and Wizkid was ranked second. Other artistes ahead of Davido included Ayra Starr, Tems, Seyi Vibez, Omah Lay, Buju and Burna Boy. Benji then used the figures to question the strength of Davido’s 30BG fanbase, turning what could have been a simple chart discussion into another debate about one of Afrobeats’ biggest stars.

Davido Had One Question for His Critics

Rather than allow the ranking to speak for itself, Davido responded directly. His main argument was that the figures being used against him covered the first half of 2026, a period during which he had not released new music.

Davido wrote in response to the criticism:

“Did I drop anything h1 until after mid-year!”

He went further, pointing to his wider record over the past several years and arguing that his career should not be judged solely by one mid-year streaming snapshot. His response quickly became part of the story itself, with fans and social media users debating whether the mid-year numbers fairly represented Davido’s current commercial strength.

What the Streaming Numbers Actually Show

The important point is that the ranking being discussed covers the first half of 2026. That means it captures streaming activity during a specific period rather than the entire year. Davido’s explanation is that his absence from the new-release cycle during that period affected his numbers. That argument also needs to be viewed alongside what happened after the period covered by the ranking. Davido later released “B4 B4” featuring Mayorkun and FOLA, and the song went on to spend five consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Official Nigeria Top 100 by early September. Turn Table Charts reported that the song recorded 2.86 million on-demand streams and 77.6 million in radio reach during the week of September 8. So while the mid-year ranking provides one measurable snapshot, subsequent chart performance provides another piece of the picture.

The 30BG Debate Adds More Fuel

The discussion became even more personal when Benji questioned the loyalty of Davido’s supporters. The 30BG fan base has long been one of the most visible fan communities in African pop culture, and its size and loyalty frequently become part of conversations surrounding Davido’s career. Benji’s argument, according to reports, was essentially that such a highly vocal fan base should be able to generate stronger streaming numbers for the singer. Davido rejected that line of reasoning and pointed instead to his broader commercial record. He argued that he has produced major records consistently over the past four to five years, suggesting that a single ranking should not erase that history.

    One Ranking, Two Different Interpretations

The interesting part of this latest exchange is that both sides are looking at the same general subject from different angles. The critic focused on the numbers from the first half of 2026. Davido focused on the release circumstances and his longer-term commercial record. Neither point automatically cancels out the other. A streaming ranking can accurately show how many people streamed an artiste’s music during a particular period, while the timing of releases can also influence how much new music an artiste has available to generate streams. And Davido’s subsequent chart performance with “B4 B4” shows that his post-mid-year activity cannot be understood solely through the earlier ranking.

For now, the online argument has moved beyond a simple chart position and into a bigger conversation about how Afrobeats stars should be measured by current streaming numbers, release activity, fan loyalty, or a combination of all three. Davido has made his position clear. His critics have made theirs. And with the singer already demonstrating strong chart performance after the mid-year period, the debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

Do you think Davido’s first-half streaming numbers tell the full story of his 2026 performance, or should artistes be judged over a longer period?
