The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has renamed its national headquarters after its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, and unveiled a bust in his honour.

The ceremony took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, as part of activities marking what would have been the late former President’s 79th birthday.

This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.” It aims to celebrate his life, leadership and contributions to Ghana’s democracy.

The day’s activities began with the official renaming of the party’s headquarters.

The move is meant to preserve the memory of Rawlings, who is widely credited with founding the NDC and helping shape Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

A bust of the late statesman was also unveiled at the party’s headquarters.

Senior party officials, supporters and invited guests attended the ceremony. They reflected on Rawlings’ influence on Ghana’s democratic journey and the relevance of his ideals.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to attend the event and deliver an address.

Other senior party figures are also expected to pay tribute to the former President and celebrate his contribution to national development.

Rawlings died in November 2020. He remains one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s modern political history.

He first led the country as a military ruler before overseeing the return to constitutional rule.

He later became Ghana’s first President under the Fourth Republic and served from 1993 to 2001.

The renaming of the party headquarters and the unveiling of the bust reflect the NDC’s efforts to preserve the legacy of its founder and uphold the values he championed throughout his public life.
