Heavy rains flood Weija Highway, leaving motorists stranded in hours-long gridlock

Heavy rains that hit Accra on Tuesday morning caused severe flooding on the Weija SCC–Atala stretch of the Accra–Takoradi Highway.

The floodwaters covered parts of the road and left thick layers of silt on the highway. Several vehicles got stuck, while traffic slowed to a crawl.

Many commuters faced long delays. A journey that normally takes about five minutes lasted more than two hours.

The flooding blocked both the eastbound and Accra-bound lanes. As a result, motorists had to use the westbound carriageway.

The diversion created heavy congestion. Long queues of vehicles stretched for more than five kilometres.

Drivers struggled to move through the flooded area. Some vehicles became trapped in the silt and needed assistance.

One stranded vehicle reportedly remained stuck for more than an hour while people tried to remove it from the road.

Floodwaters covered nearly a kilometre of the eastbound side of the highway. Debris and mud made the stretch difficult to access.

The flooded road created major challenges for drivers and increased travel times across the area.

The latest incident has once again raised concerns about flooding along the Weija corridor.

A motorist identified as Prince called on the government to speed up funding for the ongoing drainage project.

He said completed drains around Barrier, Atala and the SCC area are working well. However, large sections of the project remain unfinished.

According to him, floodwaters continue to cause damage before reaching the completed drains.

“The new drains are working, but much of the project is still incomplete. Floodwater causes damage before it reaches the finished sections,” he said.

Prince urged the public not to blame contractors for the flooding. He noted that work on the project is still ongoing.

Many motorists expressed frustration as traffic remained at a standstill for hours.

By Tuesday morning, long lines of vehicles had formed on both sides of the affected stretch.

The flooding once again highlighted the need for a lasting solution to the recurring problem on the Weija section of the Accra–Takoradi Highway.
