One person has died and three others sustained injuries after a collision between a tipper truck and a fuel tanker on the Accra-Tema Motorway sparked a major fire in the early hours of Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

The accident occurred between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana and involved a tipper truck with registration number AS 466-19, which was transporting 2×6 wood, and a fuel tanker with registration number AS 3555-24 carrying 54,000 litres of fuel.

The impact of the collision caused the tanker to catch fire, triggering a large-scale emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service.

According to emergency responders, three fire tenders were dispatched to the scene, with the first crew arriving within four minutes of receiving the distress call at 11:54pm. Additional personnel from the Ashaiman and Industrial fire stations, as well as a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, were later deployed to support firefighting efforts.

Three injured persons were rushed to the Tema General Hospital for medical treatment.

Firefighters also recovered a burnt body from one of the vehicles involved in the crash and handed it over to the police for further investigation.

The blaze was brought under control at 12:56am and completely extinguished at 1:44am after nearly two hours of intensive firefighting operations.

Rescue teams began efforts to extract a trapped victim at 1:05am, with human remains eventually recovered at 2:19am.

The fire destroyed all 26 tyres on the fuel tanker, while an undetermined quantity of fuel was lost in the incident.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine the cause of the collision and the circumstances that led to the fatal fire.
