A teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been arrested after a viral video appeared to show him physically assaulting a female student on the school’s campus.

The arrest was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

“The Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student has been arrested! The regional education directorate is investigating the matter. Full report to be submitted to HQ,” Fenyi stated.

The incident has triggered widespread public condemnation after footage circulated on social media showing the teacher engaged in a physical confrontation with the student.

In the video, the teacher is seen repeatedly striking the student before lifting and throwing her to the ground as bystanders pleaded with him to stop. Witnesses can be heard reminding him that the student was a girl and urging restraint.

The visibly agitated teacher responded by asking, “Is she aware she is a lady?”

Authorities have not yet disclosed what led to the confrontation, and school officials have remained silent on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Ghana Education Service has confirmed that the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has launched an investigation and is expected to submit a detailed report to the agency’s headquarters.

The incident has renewed concerns about student safety and discipline practices in schools, with many members of the public calling for accountability and swift action against any form of violence within educational institutions.

Several civil society groups and social media users have also expressed shock over the incident, urging authorities to ensure justice for the student and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in schools across the country.

The outcome of the ongoing investigation is expected to determine any further disciplinary or legal action against the teacher.
