Vice-President urges NDC appointees to uphold June 4 principles

Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on government appointees, ministers, and officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain steadfast in upholding the principles that inspired the June 4, 1979 Uprising, ensuring that public policies deliver tangible improvements in the lives of Ghanaians.

Speaking at the 47th anniversary commemoration in Banda-Ahenkro, Bono Region, under the theme “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising,” she emphasized that the occasion should inspire measurable progress in national development rather than serve as mere remembrance.

“We can make Ghana much better today than it was yesterday, and much better tomorrow than it is today,” she stated.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that every policy outlined in the NDC’s manifesto must translate into visible benefits for citizens, citing investments in road infrastructure, markets, and healthcare facilities as examples. While acknowledging concerns over unemployment, she appealed for patience as the government works to strengthen the economy and create sustainable jobs.

The event featured a flag-raising ceremony, wreath-laying, lighting of a perpetual flame, and a grand durbar symbolizing remembrance, unity, and commitment to democratic ideals. Wreaths were laid by representatives of government, security services, traditional authorities, farmers, fishers, women, youth, and cadres.

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah urged the Inspector-General of Police to expedite investigations into the deaths of eight people during the 2020 general election, stressing that justice would strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions.

General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey described the June 4 Uprising as a defining moment in Ghana’s political history, reminding party members that principled, selfless leadership rooted in accountability and integrity remains essential for national development.

The commemoration concluded with renewed calls for stronger institutions, responsible leadership, and governance that delivers real benefits to citizens.
