The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dismissed claims that the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative is losing momentum, insisting that ongoing corruption prosecutions are instead increasing pressure on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking to journalists after appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Wednesday, Dr. Ayine rejected suggestions that the government was shifting its focus away from the initiative.
According to him, assertions that the ORAL programme is failing are inaccurate and do not reflect the current state of government efforts to combat corruption.
He stated that significant progress has been made in prosecuting corruption-related offences since he assumed office, arguing that his administration has taken unprecedented steps in pursuing such cases.
Dr. Ayine noted that he had initiated five corruption cases within a single year, describing it as a notable development under the Fourth Republic and encouraging a review of previous records.
He further stated that the ongoing court cases demonstrate the government’s determination to address corruption and hold individuals accountable through the legal process.
According to him, the prosecutions currently before the courts are creating pressure within the opposition because some party members fear possible legal consequences if found guilty.
He emphasized that his office has approached investigations and prosecutions with diligence and seriousness, adding that concerns within the opposition may stem from the possibility that individuals implicated in alleged corrupt activities could face punishment under the law.
The Attorney General maintained that the ORAL initiative remains active and continues to move forward despite criticism from political opponents.
He reiterated that claims suggesting the government is abandoning the initiative are unfounded and expressed confidence that the programme will ultimately achieve its intended objectives.
