The Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has praised the government’s decision to establish the Value for Money Office, describing it as an important step toward improving accountability and addressing financial irregularities within the public sector.
Speaking on a television programme on Tuesday, May 11, Mr Adorye stated that although some public officials may be uncomfortable with the initiative, he believes the office is necessary to strengthen transparency and oversight in government spending.
According to him, the introduction of the office could play a critical role in improving monitoring mechanisms surrounding public procurement and expenditure.
He noted that Ghana already has procurement laws and regulatory institutions designed to ensure compliance, prevent inflated contract costs, and promote accountability in public financial management.
However, Mr Adorye questioned why reports from the Auditor-General’s Department continue to highlight widespread financial infractions within government institutions each year.
He suggested that the recurring nature of such findings points either to weaknesses in enforcement or broader systemic gaps within the existing framework.
The politician expressed optimism that the Value for Money Office would provide an additional layer of scrutiny capable of reducing financial mismanagement and strengthening governance across the public sector.
According to him, the success of the office will ultimately depend on its ability to independently assess public spending and ensure that state resources are utilised efficiently and transparently.
The establishment of the office forms part of broader government efforts to tighten oversight of public procurement and curb inflated contracts within state institutions.
