Tragedy has struck the Ayanfuri Traditional Area in the Diaso District following the death of Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of Ayanfuri, after he allegedly shot himself accidentally during a funeral ceremony.

The incident occurred on Friday, May 9, 2026, during the funeral rites of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng at Ayanfuri.

According to police reports, Nana Kwabena Okyere was handling a pump-action gun when it accidentally discharged, causing a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The chief was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment but sadly passed away while receiving medical care.

His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary pending further investigations.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
