About 620,000 candidates will begin the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on Monday, May 4.

The nationwide exam is conducted by the West African Examinations Council. It will run until May 11.

A total of 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools are expected to take part.

WAEC says it has tightened measures to curb examination malpractice. It has warned candidates to follow all rules.

“Candidates found engaging in any form of malpractice will face severe sanctions,” an official said.

The council also banned the possession of mobile phones and other prohibited materials at exam centres.

It cautioned candidates against misconduct toward supervisors and invigilators. Assault or disruption could lead to serious penalties.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Ernest Kofi Davis, said officials linked to past malpractice cases will not take part this year.

“All supervisors and invigilators under investigation for their alleged involvement in last year’s BECE have been barred from participating,” he said.

The stricter measures aim to protect the credibility of the BECE. The exam remains a key pathway to senior high school placement in Ghana.
