John Dramani Mahama has proposed a new law to criminalise the demand for sexual or romantic relationships in exchange for jobs. He described the practice as exploitative and unacceptable.

The President made the call on Saturday, May 2, during a town hall meeting at Adweso in Koforidua. The event marked the end of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region.

Addressing participants, Mr Mahama condemned what he described as an abuse of power by some employers. He said some men demand intimate relationships from women before offering them jobs.

“One of the worst things… is that sometimes employers demand romantic relationships before giving jobs. It is unacceptable. It must stop,” he said.

He stressed that such conduct should attract strict legal punishment. He added that stronger laws are needed to protect women from exploitation in the workplace.

The President also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to gender equality. He said efforts are ongoing to fully implement the Affirmative Action law.
