High Commissioner targets trade bottlenecks to boost Ghana-UK relations

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, has reaffirmed her commitment to driving investment into Ghana, emphasising that economic diplomacy remains the central focus of her mandate.

Speaking during an interview with George Wiafe, she noted that her performance is being assessed primarily on her ability to attract capital inflows and strengthen economic ties between Ghana and the UK.

According to her, economic diplomacy ranks as the top priority among the key performance indicators assigned to her role, a directive she says has guided her proactive engagement strategy since assuming office.

Her remarks come at a time when global capital flows are tightening, with many countries increasingly prioritising domestic economic interests amid evolving UK aid and investment policies.

Despite these constraints, the High Commissioner maintains that her approach has been deliberate and hands-on, particularly through direct engagement with Ghanaian-owned businesses operating in the United Kingdom.

She explained that these interactions are designed to uncover practical challenges affecting trade and investment between the two countries. By engaging business owners directly, she aims to identify systemic bottlenecks and propose targeted solutions.

A major issue highlighted through these consultations, she noted, relates to certification and regulatory standards. While Ghana’s certification framework aligns with stringent European benchmarks, gaining equivalent recognition within the UK market remains a challenge.

She stressed that addressing these technical barriers will be critical to enhancing trade volumes and positioning Ghana as a more attractive destination for UK-based investors.
