Antoine Semenyo has issued a bold warning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, declaring that Ghana’s Black Stars are ready to “cause nightmares” for Group L opponents England, Croatia and Panama.
The 26-year-old forward heads into the tournament in North America hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada—as a far more influential figure than he was in Qatar 2022, where he made only two substitute appearances while still playing in England’s second tier.
Now competing at the highest level, Semenyo is expected to spearhead Ghana’s attack and believes the team has evolved beyond simply making up the numbers.
“I don’t feel like a natural winger. I see myself more as an inside forward… I just like to cause defenders nightmares,” he said on the All Out Football podcast, outlining his attacking mindset ahead of clashes with top opposition.
Ghana face a stern test in Group L, taking on England, Croatia and Panama, with a high-profile encounter against England scheduled for June 23 in Boston. Despite the challenge, Semenyo insists the squad now has the experience and belief to compete.
However, Ghana’s preparations have been dealt a significant blow with the absence of talisman Mohammed Kudus, who has been ruled out of the tournament through injury.
Semenyo also acknowledged the pressure that comes with representing Ghana, particularly given criticism over his return of three goals in 34 international appearances.
“In Ghana, the expectation is that every touch should lead to a goal. If not, you’re judged harshly football means everything,” he admitted.
The forward, who now plays alongside Erling Haaland at Manchester City, says exposure to elite competition has sharpened his movement and finishing.
“He’s an incredible goalscorer. I’ve learned a lot from him his movement, his finishing and I’m adding that to my game,” Semenyo said.
With expectations rising, Semenyo sees the World Cup as an opportunity to turn promise into performance and cement his role as a key figure for the Black Stars.
“I’m looking forward to it. It won’t be easy, especially against England, but we have the experience,” he said.
